How the International School of Riga brings education to life beyond the classroom

At the International School of Riga, we understand that academic excellence is only one part of a child’s success. Belonging, joy, and community matter just as much. That’s why events like our annual Primary School Sleepover are more than just fun—they’re part of our holistic approach to education.

Recently, our Primary Campus celebrated Book Week, a beloved ISR tradition filled with reading, creativity, and connection. Students enjoyed activities such as reading to younger peers, attending author visits, and exploring the National Library of Latvia. The week concluded with our overnight sleepover, where more than 90 students from Kindergarten to Grade 5 stayed at school for a night of books, movies, music, and dancing.

Why These Events Matter for Student Development

Modern research confirms that a sense of school belonging improves academic motivation, mental health, and social development. According to the American Psychological Association, when students feel emotionally connected to their school community, they are more likely to succeed and thrive.

At ISR, events like sleepovers are designed to help students:

  • Develop confidence and independence in a safe environment

  • Build cross-grade friendships and communication skills

  • See school as a joyful, welcoming place

  • Connect with teachers beyond academics

We believe that education doesn’t stop when the bell rings—it continues through shared experiences that shape how children feel about learning and about themselves.

Teachers as Community Builders

What makes these events truly special is our faculty. ISR teachers go above and beyond to create meaningful, memorable experiences for students. Whether leading bedtime stories, cheering during Eurovision, or dancing alongside students at the disco, their presence transforms school from a place of instruction to a place of care.

With over 60% international staff and educators trained in IB PYP methodology, our team is deeply committed to building an inclusive and supportive international learning environment.

Belonging in an International School Setting

At ISR, we proudly serve a diverse community of over 47 nationalities. That’s why we intentionally design events that bring students, teachers, and families together to foster mutual respect and friendship.

Activities like Book Week, spirit days, and overnight events help children build the social and emotional foundation they need to succeed in a global world. This approach is central to our mission—and it’s why families choose ISR when looking for a top international school in Riga.
